A common reason why the sound and image in the games "chop" or that the games are difficult to start on an old playstation is that the mechanics on which the laser lens slides as it goes back and forth begin to wear out.
Often, the playstation works better for a while by just putting it up and down or on the side, then the parts that the laser is supposed to "slide" are not loaded. But since it is not made to work upside down, it is not a good solution in the long run.
If you are a little handy, you can instead replace the worn parts with the corresponding parts included in this repair kit.
Note - This kit is for playstation model SCPH-1002 ONLY. Newer Playstation has an improved model of laser unit, where it is usually enough to submit to us for cleaning and calibration of the laser power (350 :-)
