We expect that all or most games will be region-free, but some titles may only work if you buy the Japanese edition.
If you are going to watch movies then expect only Japanese editions of the films will work. Although Japan and Europe "share" region (R2), Japanese films are in NTSC format and European in PAL format. Unfortunately, there is a limitation in PS3, it refuses to play PAL DVD movies :-(
